Full Description
During investigations at Shottendane road near Margate a group of three sunken-featured buildings were identified in the northern part of excavation area A.All three features were typical of the remains of this class of structure, consisting of sub-rectangular pits between 3.46m and 3.8m long, 2.6 to 3m wide and 0.66m to 0.88m deep, with steeply sloping/vertical sides and flat bases. Characteristically, all three were associated with a pair of ‘axial’ postholes located on the short sides of the sunken feature. Their infill sequences were simple, with thin basal deposits deriving from natural silting (perhaps in some cases representing material accumulating beneath a suspended floor during the building’s use), sealed deliberate backfill deposits. Finds from these backfills include Anglo-Saxon pottery, ironwork, worked stone objects, animal bone and fired clay. Roman pottery was also recovered from all three structures.
