Full Description
A Second World War minefield extending for at least 1 km along the coast around Allhallows Marshes from the eastern edge of Allhallows-on Sea . The minefield forms part of the extensive wartime coastal defences and was seen as a strip closely delimited by a barbed wire fence. The actual minefield ranged from 15m to 20m in width and had traces of small craters (3-4m in diameter) at intervals where charges had been detonated, possibly at the time of removal. The coastal defences continue westwards around Allhallows-on-Sea as rows of of anti-tank cubes and dragons's teeth (NMR Monument number: 1536310), then continuing to west to the edge of St Mary's Marsh as a minefield (NMR Monument number: 1536303).
These defences were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1)
