Monument record TQ 87 SW 1266 - Post-medieval causeway and wharf, Yantlet Creek

The earthworks of a causeway on the marshes north of Damhead Creek can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This causeway ran for just over 500m between TQ 8164 7398 and TQ 8206 7378 and connected Stoke Road to a wharf on a channel that fed in to Damhead Creek (NMR 1541592). Neither the wharf (centred on TQ 8208 7378) nor the causeway were depicted on the 1876 Ordnance Survey map and are first shown on the 1896 edition. This causeway is joinedby one circa 80m in length that ran along the southern side of the railway line. This utilised the same railway crossing and provided access to arable fields to the west.Landscaping of this area in the 1990s has levelled or buried this earthwork. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-3)
