Summary

A Second World War slit trench located immediately to the south of Grain Fort at the northern end of the 19th Century military road linking Grain Fort and Dummy Battery. Wartime photographs show the trench lying adjacent to a line of barbed wire obstruction, part of the extensive anti-invasion defences and lines of barbed wire obstructing the coast of the Isle of Grain. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.

Full Description

A Second World War slit trench located at TQ 8906 7652, immediately to the south of Grain Fort at the northern end of the 19th Century military road linking Grain Fort and Dummy Battery. Wartime photographs show the trench (a zig-zag ditch with 5 sections) lying adjacent to a line of barbed wire obstruction, part of the extensive anti-invasion defences and lines of barbed wire obstructing the coast of the Isle of Grain. These were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1)
