Full Description
A network of WW2 anti-invasion defences in the form of barbed wire obstructions extending for over 1km up the coast and inland for over 400m (area centre :TQ 8912 7645). The wire could be seen running between and around existing 19th century forts and batteries and wartime installations. Seen on RAF aerial photographs taken in 1942, these barbed wire obstructions appear to break the coastal strip up into cells, impeding the progress inland of potential invading forces landing on the be beaches at Grain. On the photographs taken in 1942 the traces of earlier lines of barbed wire can be seen being crossed by later wire obstructions. Though temporary in nature these obstructions played an important part in the coastal defences.
These were mapped from 1942 RAF aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (1)
