Monument record TQ 87 SW 1299 - Post-medieval causeway, Stoke Saltings

Summary

The earthworks of a causeway on the marshes by Stoke Saltings can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946. This causeway ran for approximately 135m and provided access to a wharf on a channel that fed in to Damhead Creek (NMR 1541666). Access to the wharf appears to originally have been along the sea wall which was widened for this purpose. The causeway follows the line of a path first depicted by the Ordnance Survey in 1908. The southern end of the causeway was destroyed when the sea defences were rebuilt after the 1953 flood. This feature was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.
