Full Description
A series of undated hollow ways were identified during a survey of Charing Beech Hangers wood, near Ashford. The survey was carried out by Canterbury Archaeological Trust in 2004. Some of the hollow ways may be post-medieval or earlier in date.
The longest route was recorded at around 500m in length between TQ 598350 148070 to TQ 59801 148410. This route may have originally been associated with a hedgerow, evidenced by a series of tree stumps and pollarded trees on a bank to one side of the hollow way.
Some of the hollow ways are suggested (1) to have originally linked sections of the Pilgrim's Way (TQ 55 SE 124), therefore these trackways may have been established in prehistory or during the medieval period. (1)
