Full Description

A fougasse system was installed all along the beach from Kingsdown to Sandwich Bay. This was a system of pipes leading into the beach that could set the whole beach alight. There were tanks of the flammable liquid at intervals with pumps.

Petroleum Warfare Site (Sector 6). Cassini ref 820663. 'Flame trap on sea in front of tubular scaffolding obstacle. Installation will be complete by 6 Nov 40. All tanks should be filled by 8 Nov 40. Decision re ignition arrangements still awaited from Ignition Committee, Petroleum Warfare Department. 3 Power Pumps.' The beach running from Kingsdown to North Deal. (1)
