Full Description
Breech-loading casemates by Shornemead Fort. Coastal battery. These were created in 1895 to mount 2 x quick-firing guns to cover a projected minefield in wartime. These in turn were replaced by emplacements for 5.5-inch guns in World War II. Very badly derelict. Almost skeletal structure with some external features [?] [information from 1979 aerial photographs].Shornemead Fort, on South bank of Thames, West of Church Street. (1)
