Full Description

[Name Centred TQ 631453134] Ancient Bronze and Stone Implements, Urns etc. found A.D.1899-1903 [TI] (1) Whilst carrying on excavations in Hurst Wood and north of Gover Hill, a considerable amount of bronze and stone implements were found. They include one stone axe, two small bronze axes, a number of small badly burnt pottery urns, capacity about 1/2 pint (the whole of these however collapsed when exposed to the air). There were also a number of stones which evidently had been used as rubbing stones, a few flint arrowheads, none of them good specimens, and part of a stone which was probably used for grinding flour. (2) F.W.E. Shrivell is dead and no further information on this site was gained in the field; none of the finds are in Maidstone Museum. The area indicated is an old wood on a false crest and there is no record of subsequent finds. (3)
