Full Description
Site of the Theatre Royal, Snargate Street, Dover as shown on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Edition O/S maps. It would appear the the original theatre was opened in Dover in about 1790, together with Assembly Rooms used for balls, major social functions and dinners. Following a make over the theatre was renamed the Tivoli as shown on the 2nd Edition map. The theatre is shown as the Theatre Royal again on the 3rd Edition map and it was later renamed the Royal Hippodrome as shown on the 4th Edition O/S map. The theatre finally closed in 1944 after a German shell hit the building and the remains were demolished in 1951.
