Findspot record TQ 65 SW 18 - Mesolithic and Neolithic implements from vicinity of Leavers

Summary

Two Thames picks, discoidal thumb scrapers, blades and unworked flakes were made during the closing years of the 19th century. The objects probably came from extensive gravel workings at Leavers which is situated between Hadlow Common and Goose Green. Mesolithic implements comprising of 1 Tranchet axe, 2 Picks, 1 core, 60 blades/flakes, 36 scrapers and 9 other implements have also been found at Leaver's Farm, East Peckham.

Full Description

In store Maidstone Museum is a collection of flints (Accn. No. 8.52) from 'Leavers', donated by the late Mr. W.H. Golding of Kingshill, Kingskerswell, S. Devon. (Leavers is the area centred TQ 643510 situated between Hadlow Common and Goose Green). It was made during the closing years of the 19th c. and comprises an Abbevillian hand axe, 2 Thames picks, discoidal thumb scrapers, blades and unworked flakes. Leavers was formerly part of the extensive Golding holdings in E. Peckham. No information on the exact provenance of the finds was gained locally, but they came probably from extensive gravel workings in the area.
