Summary

The remains of a mid-twentieth century tramway can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This tramway linked the brickworks south of Hoo St. Werburgh (NMR 1545288) to the clay pit near Abbots Court (NMR 1546812). According to map evidence this line was laid after 1938 and the remains of this line can be traced for 1291m on the 1947 air photos. Air photos taken in 2007 show some of the remains of this tramway are preserved in a 218m long track at TQ 7879 7153. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project

Full Description

The remains of a mid-twentieth century tramway can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947. This tramway linked the brickworks south of Hoo St. Werburgh (NMR 1545288) to the clay pit near Abbots Court (NMR 1546812). According to map evidence this line was laid after 1938 and the remains of this line can be traced for 1291m between TQ 7860 7139 and TQ 7964 7215 on 1947 air photos. Air photos taken in 2007 show some of the remains of this tramway are preserved in a 218m long track at TQ 7879 7153. This site was mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project.(1-3)
