[Marginal] The suggestive name Comp. led the writer to search the Great Comp Woods [shown on small scale map in book centred at TQ 640549] In the extreme north corner of Great Comp, close to the house of that name and very near the Ightham Road, an entire track of wood, half a mile square, is bounded on the east by a sunken road, and on the remaining sides by a wide trench which on the west was 6 feet deep for 200 paces. On the north it is not so formidable but sufficiently marked to be seen from outside the wood. (1) Great Comp Wood included in list of places where 'traces of fortresses' have been noted but are not well defined or of sufficient importance to merit description. [Refs. Auth.1] (2) Add. ref. to Authy 2. (3) The description by Auth.1 suggests the wood to have extended further northwards at that time, than it does today. A perambulation was made of the fields between the Ightham Road and Great Comp and the woods, and of the northern part of the woods where accessible, but no trace of earthworks was seen. (4)
