Full Description

[Name centred TQ 63855036] Romano-British burials found AD 1895. (1) Two urns containing charcoal and burnt bones discovered in the Hadlow Cemetery. Reported by F W E Shrivell. August 1896. (2,3) The upper stone of a circular quern, of pudding-stone, recently found at the Hadlow cemetery site, has been presented to Maidstone Museum, (Acc No 2/1957) by W/Cdr. W.V. Dumbreck. (4) Roman tile, 1953; pudding-stone quern, Oct 1956. (5) The pits found in 1953 were discovered whilst trenching for drains. They were on gravel, c. 18" - 24" deep and about 12" across. Nothing was found in them. They had a burnt appearance and possibly represented cremation burials. (6) Mr L R A Grove, Curator, states that both tile and quern are in the museum, but he has no knowledge of the earlier finds. The discrepance of dates in authorities 1, 2 and 3 could not be resolved. (7) The following finds sited on 1:2500 trace: (a) [TQ 63875039] Pits (b) [TQ 64015034] Quern (pudding-stone) (c) [TQ 63895028] Tile, 1953. (8) Checked and correct: there have been no subsequent finds. (9)
