Summary
The Amplegarth was a 3707 Ton steamship built in 1910 by W Pickersgill & Sons of Sunderland was on a voyage from the Kent Downs to St Nazaire with a cargo of coal when she struck a mine laid by UC-71 on 10 May 1918. This explosion blew the winch and 12 Pounder gun off the poop deck. The crew took to the boats and made their way into Dover harbour..
