Full Description
This steamship was proceeding at about 11 knots, when a large explosion occurred under No.2 hatch just in front of the bridge at 9.45am, the vessel having struck a mine laid by the German submarine UC-6. She immediately caught fire and commenced to sink rapidly by the head. Her engine was stopped and the boats ordered to be lowered, all the crew getting in them with the exception of five men who jumped overboard. They were subsequently picked up. The vessel sank at approximately 9.25am. The survivors were picked up by patrol boats, landing at Dover at 5pm. the same day. The ship's papers and W/T. code books went down with the ship.
