Vertical Datum: LAT Quality of Depth: SWS The BALAKANI was mined in 1915. A total loss. 6 Lives lost (captain survived). Vessel was owned by Petroleum SS Co Ltd. Was built by Sir J Laing Sons of Sunderland in 1899. 2 decks, steel built, 2345 tons net. 5057 tons of cargo. 22-MAY-1959 Cleared to 8fms scour 23fms. Full sweep not carried out position 51 31 08N 001 21 00E. 22-MAY-1959 Not swept least depth on line of sounding 58ft, retained 8fms and amended position to 51 31 09N 001 20 59E. 15-MAR-1962 Drift sweep clear 59ft foul 61ft. Least echosounder depth 61ft in 73-75ft, scour 125ft. This is a large wreck sitting in a deep scour. There is a marked slick up and down tide of it. 05-MAR-1964 Least echosounder 64 In 65ft scour 121ft. 26-JAN-1967 Located by echo sounder least depth 66ft scour 85ft excellent a/s. Swirl on surface. 31-JUL-1969 2 ship drift sweep. Wreck cleared at 17.8m, fouled at 18.1m. Least over the wreck by echo 18m. General depth of the seabed by echo 20-25m, depth of scour by echo 38m. A large wreck in a very deep scour, its position is marked by considerable swirl up and down tide. Position 51 31 10N 001 21 01E. 06-AUG-1969 Swept, no change to above. 17-APR-1974 Echosounder depth on pla survey 23.8m. 03-JUL-1974 Position 51 31 09n 001 20 59e, sweep clear 15.5m foul 15.9 in 21m. Scour 36.5m. Least echosounder 17.2m. Large wreck causing obvious surface turbulance lies NNW/SSE in deep scour.
