Vertical Datum: LAT Quality of Depth: SWS The CITY OF RISBANE broke in two and sank with the loss of 8 lives after being bombed and set on fire by German aircraft, 1940. 29-SEP-1949 Salvage in progress. 27-OCT-1949 Salvage suspended. 17-JUN-1950 Salvage operations in progress. 20-NOV-1950 Salvage discontinued. 11-JAN-1952 Salvage operations completed 1951. Dispersed by private contractors in 1951 to within 1ft of seabed. 11-AUG-1940 Hull well above hw - funnel stands 50ft above high water lying in a 204degs - 024degs direction 463ft long, position of wreck 061degs 4.90Miles from south shingles beacon. 21-AUG-1942 Sweep of Knock Deep. Dries 8ft. No mast visible. 19-MAY-1959 Dispersed by private contractors to within 1ft of the seabed towards the end of 1951. 12-JUL-1960 No trace by echo sounder or a/s. Considered to be non existant. 25-JAN-1967 Not searched for. 31-JUL-1969 Least depth over the wreck by echo 4.2M general depth of the seabed by echo 5m depth of scour by echo 7.4M. This wreck is charted as foul. The surrounding seabed is very uneven and sonar was not employed. Close sounding revealed an indication of the wreck which is of small extent and is very close to a 2-3m bank. Fixed in position 51 32 19N 001 22 24E. 03-JUL-1974 Position 51 32 18N 001 22 21E. Not located by echo sounder but found by wire drag sweep in 3.8M. No scour, bottom wire fouled in several places occuring in ENE/WSW dirn but wire came clear of obstructions. 09-JUN-1980 Located in 51 32 19N 001 22 22E, swept clear at 3.7M, foul at 4m, in general depth 4m. Depth of scour 7m. Scattered wreckage on uneven seabed.
Bombed by German aircraft and set on fire, after which she was beached on the southern end of the Long Sand, still burning. The fire continued for three whole days until the vessel was completely gutted, and declaired a total loss. Her cargo consisted of 2,000 tons of lead ingots, tinned fruit, wool, flour and frozen food. The metal cargo was salvaged by Risdon Beazly Ltd.
