Full Description
[Area centred TQ 676673] Cobhambury Wood. "On high ground commanding an extensive view eastward, above the road from Cobham to Buxton, are traces which may appertain to a hill fort. Mr George Payne considers the "ramparts" to be outlines of an extensive oppidum, some 300 yds. square; but the rampart seems in places to be very meagre, more a terracing of the slope than a bank, and the trenches die out." (1) Nothing resembling an earthwork was seen. Cobhambury Wood is not a good site for a defensive work as it is on an east facing slop dominated completely by the summit of Cobhambury Hill to the west. (2) Additional bibliography. (3-4)
