Vertical Datum: LAT Quality of Depth: ES Built: 1925 Owners: General Steam Navigation Company The MEREL was mined in 1939. Cargo included brass rods, aniline and casein. 05-JUN-1950 Lucas wire sweep after dispersal. Clear 27ft, foul 28ft, seabed 32-40ft, but depths of 24-28ft exist within 2 cables. Position 51 19 39.0N, 001 30 45.0E. 15-FEB-1961 Wire swept. Clear 30ft, foul 32ft. Least echosounder in general depth 40ft. 04-MAR-1969 Least echosounder 30ft. Seabed 30-40ft. No scour by echosounder. 30-JAN-1974 Position 51 19 36.0N, 001 30 48.0E. Close sounded. Least depth 9.8m in 10-12m. Scour 12.6m. Irregularly undulating seabed. Small wreck in wide trough. 13-MAR-1980 Not found during side scan sonar area search. 28-OCT-1980 Examined in 51 19 37.0N, 001 30 49.0E. Least echosounder depth 8.9 in general depth 12m. Side scan sonar height 3m. Wreck lies in 2 pieces, about 40m apart. Northern part shallowest, but deeper than seabed level nearby. 10-JUL-1986 Examined in 51 19 36.0N, 001 30 48.0E. Only portion of wreck was found, the N portion is thought to have been buried. Least depth by echosounder 10m in general depths 7.5-11.5m. Scour depth 12.3m.
