Vertical Datum: LAT Quality of Depth: ES The KARMT was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine U245, 1945. Cargo included tin concentrate, which is thought to have been salvaged (Ocean Research Ltd, 24-FEB-1988). 16-OCT-1959 Drift swept after salvage. Clear at 63ft. Least echosounder depth 66 in general depth 78ft. Lies NE/SW and stands 15ft above seabed. Scour depth 83ft. 03-JAN-1971 Position 51 24 56.0N, 001 40 19.0E. Least echosounder depth 21.4 in general depth 22m Scour 24.3m. Seabed flat. Gives good sonar return from NE at 900 yards. Poor from SW and no contact from SE. Sonar conditions could have been affected by weather. Close sounded over wreck, which appears dispersed over a large area. (1)

Detailed side sonar scan and magnetometer survey results were obtained in 2007. SS Karmt: A Norwegian Cargo vessel torpedoed and sunk by U245 in 1945. Cargo of palm kernels, groundnuts and gold and tin concentrate. Metals later salvaged. Wreck remains appear to be dispersed over a large area. (2)

The MV Karmt was built in 1938 at Scotstoun by the Blythwood Shipbuilding company. It was equiped with a 4 inch gun. It was torpedoed by U-245 on 18/4/1945. (3)
