Full Description
At the end of the 18th century a landscaped park was laid out for Thomas Hawkins of Nash Court (park located to Nash Court house, TR 05 NW 17). This included in 1798 the digging of an ornamental lake. Two mounds at Nash Court, first shown on the map of 1801 (probably the privately published O.S. 1 inch survey of that date) were once considered to be Roman burials, on grounds of shape, size and proximity to Watling Street. In 1948 the tenant wished to remove the mounds, and total excavation was undertaken of the northern mound by Mr R F Jessup. The mound proved to be built of a series of regular tips of soil, yielding clay-pipe fragments dateable to as late as 1800, undoubtedly dropped during construction of the mound. The mounds were therefore interpreted as tree-mounds built as part of the landscaping of the park, adjacent to the ornamental lake, and probably formed from the material excavated for the lake. The second mound was demolished in 1948. The ornamental lake had been filled prior to 1948. (1)
One or other of the mounds may be equated with a ring ditch recorded some 300m south east of Nash Court [TR 05 NE 15]. (2)
