Full Description
NGR TQ 90 64 (LO) The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for AD 892/893 states; 'Then immediately afterwards Haesten came with 80 ships up the Thames estuary and made himself a fortress at Milton'. Richards (1991) and Taylor (1965) consider 'Milton' to have been Milton Regis, near Sittingbourne, but there is no trace of the Viking camp mentioned in the account. If there was a Viking camp at Milton Regis, it would probably have been in the area of Milton Creek, now and industrial estate. Geogrphically, the reference is, in fact, more likely to refer to Milton near Gravesend (TQ 65 74). (1-4). Additional reference (5).
