Full Description

Roman urn-burials were discovered at Upper Halling, in the quarry called `Clinkum'. The Pilgrims Way from Whorne's Place [TQ 706662] passes it. (1) The cement works now known as the Rugby Portland Cement Co. was, at the turn of the century, known as Clinkum Works. The only quarries being worked about that time were the Grey quarry [Greypit - TQ 6964] and the White Quarry (a) [White Pit - TQ 6965]. No information was gained regarding the finds. From the above information and a perambulation of the route, White Pit would seem to be the quarry referred to by Payne. (2)
