Full Description

[TQ 67046515] Human Remains found A.D.1930-31 [T.I.] (1) Human Remains from Luddesdown. Towards the end of 1930, workmen were digging the foundation for the electricity pylon, situated 10 chains south of Round Wood, and in doing so unearthed some human bones. Early in 1931 following further investigation at the site, J.H.Evans Esq. discovered bones of a second skeleton. The bones were examined by Sir Arthur Keith of the Royal College of Surgeons, who found that both skeletons were of women, of 70 years of age or more. In the absence of archaeological evidence such as pottery, or tools, Sir Arthur Keith assigned the skeletons to the Roman period, on racial evidence. (2) Human remains found by workmen digging .... near Great Buckland. The first find was that of a woman whose type reminded Sir Arthur Keith of the Coldrum Skeletons, but there were no associated objects or other dating evidence. Later another adult skeleton was found with the remains of a child in its lap, both of the burials being in a large pit. The pit, it has been suggested, was a hut site or pit-dwelling, but the cleanness of the filling is hardly in favour of the suggestion. [Listed as Neolithic] (3) The site of these burials (base of Elec.Pylon) falls just below the crest of a prominent N-S ridge at a height of approx. 400' ft. The area is under cultivation and nothing was seen. (4)
