Summary

One of four bastions forming part of the Sheerness Lines. Construction began in 1797 along with Bastion No.4 incorporating the earthworks of the earlier Fort Townsend and was completed by 1816. The monument was demolished along with No.4 sometime between 1967 and 1972 and a steel works built on its site. Part of the Moat defences between the two bastions survive as a cooling pond TQ9126074644.

Full Description

References regarding the relation of the site to other defence sites. (1-3).

A bastion forming part of the Sheerness Lines defences, constructed between 1797 and 1804, incorporating the earthworks of Fort Townshend. It comprised gun emplacements at three angles and two on each flank It was destroyed by construction of steel works in 1973. A survey carried out by RCHME field staff in April 1993 found the moat to be partly preserved as cooling ponds. (4)
