Full Description
A ropeway linking Tilmanstone Colliery (see associated Monument record) with Dover docks was opened in 1929-30. The ropeway consisted of three sections. The first linked the colliery to a steam powered Driving Station at TR 322462, the second section extended to an Angle Station at TR 347429 where the ropeway turned through 90 degrees, the third section lead to Dover docks, via tunnels at Langdon Hole, TR 342422-TR340421. The ropeway was investigated in 1989 at which time the Driving Station was intact (though all traces of machinery were gone), and the tunnels were bricked up. A 1945 report indicates that the ropeway carried 1000 tons of coal per 8 hour shift. The ropeway closed in the early 1950s. (1) (2)
