Monument record TR 04 SE 19 - Clay pits - possible tile kiln, Wye with Hinxhill
Summary
Evidence for clay digging has been noted near Hinxhill. These features may be associated with 14th century tile manufacture that has been recorded in the area in extant manorial records that mention tile production from 1330-1380. Evidence for extensive clay-digging has not only been observed throughout the present woodland (Nackholt Wood), but also to the south and south west, although there is no record of these features held on the cropmarks database. A brick and tile works is depicted on the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps of c.1861 - 1895 in the area.
