Monument record TR 04 SE 20 - Clay pits - tile production site, Wye with Hinxhill

Summary

Evidence for clay digging, associated with post-medieval tile production has been observed at Nackholt Wood and to the south. Post medieval tile scatters and clay pits have also been noted and a tile production site was known in the area, possibly as early as the 14th century. Extensive evidence for clay-digging was observed not only throughout the present woodland but also to the south and south west. A brick and tile works is depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1st and 2nd edition maps of c.1861 to 1895. However this site is shown as the 'Old Nackholt tile works' in the 3rd edition map of c.1905 -1922 indicating that it was out of use by this time.
