Full Description
Campion house, thought to be medieval in origin. The site is marked as 'Doctor's Farm' on the Ordnance Survey historic maps of c.1858-1940. No further information was available due to a previously incomplete record entry.

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
BENENDEN TQ83SW STANDEN STREET 1350-0/3/98 (East side) 20/06/67 Campion House II House. Late C15 open hall with service end with C16 solar and chamber above added to left and early to mid C19 extension added to rear right. Timber-framed building, the right hand part with red brick to ground floor and close-studding with plaster infill above. Left hand part has square panels of timber-framing. Left hand side tile hung. Steeply pitched old tiled roof with late C16 brick chimneystack. L-shaped building of 2 storeys and attics, 4 windows. Mainly C20 casements. C20 brick porch. Attached to rear is an early to mid C19 extension, red brick and tile hung to front and red brick and weatherboarded at rear with 4 lattice casement windows. Originally this was a smoke bay to the open hall which has been replaced by an early C17 fireplace with wooden bressumer and spice cupboards. Parlour has late C16 open fireplace with moulded bressumer and rose carving. Remains of shutter grooves to original windows. 1st floor has octagonal crownpost with 4 head braces, remains of the smoke bay and pargetting. The C16 wing has jowled posts and roof of collar bream and butt purlins with chamfers and run out stops. Late C16 chamber fireplace and 2 plank door.

Timber framed lower end cross wing with an integral smoke bay and evidence for a contemporary aisled or quasi-aisled hall. The front 2 bays of the cross wing were jettied at the front. The entire hall range was replaced circa 1600. (2)
