In 2012 Canterbury Archaeological Trust carried out a watching brief. An inspection of the foundations and the fabric in the external walls suggested that the building was older than previously thought. It is proposed that the main body of the church was built in the 12th or 13th century, possibly replacing an earlier structure that had used tufa blocks in its construction. The building was renovated in the 15th century with the addition of new windows, doorways, buttresses and a western tower. (9)
