Full Description

In the Admiralty Court of the Cinque Ports on 01 March 1709 (1710 new calendar) the case was heard concerning goods saved from a Dutch ship lost near Margate. Date of case report (according to the Julien Calendar) given as date of date of loss. (1)

NB: Prior to the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar ("New Style") in England in 1752, the Julian Calendar ("Old Style") was in use, with the New Year additionally beginning on 25th March. Thus Old Style dates in contemporary sources between 1st January and 24th March inclusive are one year behind the Gregorian New Style reckoning. Since this is still in use today, all wrecks have been recorded as New Style for consistency. (2)
