Full Description
In the Admiralty Court of the Cinque Ports on 03 December 1701 (1701 new calendar) the case was heard concerning the Holly Ghoast, James Naler or Norris the master, which was lost near Dover. There are a number of entries relating to claims for both goods and ship's equipment. A petition from the mariners of the ship, exonerating the pilot, provides further details of the incident. The ship had loaded wool and 'liquerish'and was bound for Amsterdam. While lying in Dover Roads the wind became strong. A pilot came aboard and decided to enter the harbour for safety. Unfortunately she went aground on the bank. Seeing that there was no possibility of saving the vessel, a hole was cut in her side in order to discharge her cargo and furniture. The vessel broke to pieces. A place of lading is given but could not be deciphered. Date of case report given as date of loss.
