Full Description

The Edinburgh of Leith loaded salt, wines and chests of oranges and lemons at Lisbon. Bound for Leith she met bad weather and sprung a leak while seas repeatedly filled her deck. She made for Dover for safety. A pilot came aboard but in trying to enter the harbour ran her on the beach 'at the backside of northhead'. The ship went to pieces before all the cargo could be saved. The Case Papers are dated 27 June 1714 and give the wreck as occurring on 2nd December. The papers include the bill of lading which shows the marks by which the cargo could be known. (1)
