Full Description

The Admiralty Court Case Papers record the case of the ship Mary and Francis of London, owned by Paul Durander, Matthew Barnard the Master. Having laden 200 pigs of lead, 7700 sacks for malt, 1000 deal boards and 60 'rasors' at London for Southampton, she was driven by violent weather ashore on Romney Sands and broken to pieces. The ship was 80 tons burthen. The documents are dated 03 January 1716 (1717 new calendar) and the date of loss is given as September last. NB: The date of loss may well be 13-SEP-1716, when a storm is known to have occurred on the coast of Kent occasioning several losses: `Deal, Sept. 14. Last night we had a violent storm at SW...'
