Summary

The Anglo-Saxon settlement at Meopham was described as "a group of Saxon wooden buildings" in secondary documentary sources. There are a number of primary sources which mention Meopham during the Saxon period, these are documents of 788, 939, 955-995 and 961. Of particular interest is the will of Byrhtric dating to around 955-995, recorded by a 16th century antiquarian. The settlement is also noted in Domesday (as Mepeham), its taxable value had declined from 10 shillings in 1066 to 7 shillings in 1086.

Golding-Bird notes documentary references to Meapham in 788 939, Meapaham / Mepham in around 955-995 and Meopham in 961. In Domesday it is called Mepeham. Its taxable value paid for defence dropped from 10 shillings in 1066 to 7 shillings in 1086. The document dated to around 955-995 is the will of a thane called Byhtric detailing land to be bequeathed. It was recorded by a 16th century antiquarian. (2-3)
