Monument record TQ 66 NW 56 - Group of Saxon wooden buildings
Summary
The Anglo-Saxon settlement at Meopham was described as "a group of Saxon wooden buildings" in secondary documentary sources. There are a number of primary sources which mention Meopham during the Saxon period, these are documents of 788, 939, 955-995 and 961. Of particular interest is the will of Byrhtric dating to around 955-995, recorded by a 16th century antiquarian. The settlement is also noted in Domesday (as Mepeham), its taxable value had declined from 10 shillings in 1066 to 7 shillings in 1086.
