Full Description

Watching brief carried out in the summer of 1992 during excavation of foundations for a housing development. A light scatter of late Neolithic/Bronze Age struck flints was found across the site. Parts of a large curving ditch were observed on the line of the new road but it contained no dateable finds. A rectangular ditched enclosure of late Iron Age/early Roman date was found at the NE side of the site. There was a general scatter of mid-Iron Age to early Roman pottery across the site. A single
early Saxon burial was also found (though no bones had survived) with a bronze buckle. A decorated sword pommel, a cruciform brooch and a ditch and pit containing pottery of a similar date may suggest contemporary occupation of the site. (1)
