Full Description

Method of Fix: Aerial Photograph Interpretation Photograph Number: KCC 1961 Line 9: 6562 Registration No. ROCHSTER 76624 One of three barges lying bow to stern, end on to the shore, across the intertidal area. They are buried in the mud. On the 1967 survey (KCC 1967 Line 29:1234) this one is not double-ended and divisions/transverse mebers can be seen in the hold. This site has been identified as New World built at Milton in 1877. She was owned successively by J B White, White and the War Department. She is noted as derelict in 1946. Her remains were reported visible in 1986. (1). Upper part of wood and iron barge sticking out of the mud, even the deck timbers are preserved. Fair condition (2) t is unclear which of the three barges this one represents but the spatial position in OSGB suggests that it might be at the seaward end of the group and either covered at high tide or buried. It is not visible in recent aerial photography (as at 2011) taken at high tide on this site, where only one barge appears to be visible at what might have been the landward end of this group. (3) Probably part of the groups recorded at UKHO record 12659 or 65115, which may be variant records of the same group. (4) Seen to be located on the southern side of the Isle of Harty, the northern bank of the Swale, and opposite the Horse Sand in mid-channel. (5)
