A structure showing above the intertidal mud. In plan shaped like a noughts and crosses grid. (1)
The fragmented structural remains of what is believed to be a dismantled Second World War Maunsell anti-aircraft fort, thought be be remains from the Nore sea fort complex which was scrapped between 1959-60 following collisions by two ships in 1954 and 1955. The steel tophouses were salvaged for scrap and the concrete bases were towed ashore and dumped close to the Alpha Wharf at Cliffe. The features seen include the grid-like structure described by the previous authority thought to be a tower base. At each intersection on the base grid raised cylindrical structures were noted which are thought to have connected with the cylindrical legs of the tower. The surrounding fragments could be further base and leg fragments.
The remains of the bases were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. (2
