Full Description
A New Zealand packet ship, she sailed from St Katherines dock London on 1st February 1865 with 10 first class passengers and 60 steerage and 40 crew having been chartered by Messrs, Willis and Co. who maintained a monthly packet service. The night she sank, a steamship which proved to be the MANGERTON, 363 tons, Captain Bouchler, failed to alter course so that the two vessels collided with great force. The packet vessel was struck on the starboard side just abaft the foremast and she commenced to sink. In the confusion that followed the boats were sent away half empty, the remaining passengers and crew making use of hen coops and other material which would float. One aspect of the disaster was that none of the boats carried plugs. Within ten minutes of the collision, the steamship backed away, leaving the sea to flood the stricken ship, which rolled over on her beam ends and sank. Captain Canney was among those lost. The steamer picked up boats containing 26 survivors. Year Built: 1840 Owner: Fletcher and Co Master: Canney Crew: 40 Crew Lost: 12 Passengers: 70 Passengers Lost: 57 Date of Loss Qualifier: A
