Full Description

`The ADDER, Sloop of War, is on shore near Dungeness.' (1)(4)

`...Folkstone at 5pm and at 10pm went aground on Romney Flats 3 miles eastwards [sic] of Dungeness Light where it was thought to be beyond recovery. The vessel however was a very tight ship, and was still whole on the 16th November when Cpt Bolton of L'AIMABLE, the commanding officer of Romney Bay, ordered the VESUVIUS, Cpt Lillicrap, and the BITER, gun brig, at anchor in Romney Roads, to attempt a salvage operation. They succeeded and the ADDER came away under her own sails.' (2)

`Dungeness, Nov. 8...Saturday Nov. 3...the Boulogne squadron were suddenly overtaken by a heavy gale eastward of Dungeness, blowing from E by N to ESE...A light collier brig retaken and a Swedish brig...were under a difficulty of raising their anchors, and being in only 18 feet and less at low water, prevented their escape. The ADDER, during the night, drove on Romney Flats, and bilged, but fortunately no lives were lost.' (5)
