Full Description
Stable block for Strode Park House (built c1862) later adapted for use as part of a car factory with a purpose built manufacturing shed adjacent. The Strode Engineering Works was founded by Major Charles Precot-Westcar in 1922. Manufactured two models, the Westcar and the Heron, both based on 11.9hp Dorman engines. Heron bodywork was supplied by flying boat l=maker SE Saunders and constructed from plywood sewn together with copper wire. The Westcar was built in the stable building (at Tr 1800 6621) while the Heron was, from 1924, built in an adjoiing purpose built workshop (at TR 1801 6621) with a north lit roof. The stables later became the works' finishing shop. production ceased in 1926. The workshop has now been converted into 3 cottages (known as 'Shouldern Cottages') with dormers on the N side that are in fact converted workshop northlights. The former workshops are constrcuted of ashlar with slate roofs and barge boards while the stable are of brick, feature a clock tower on the roof ridge and a bracketed timber cornice. (1)
