Monument record TQ 65 NE 62 - Brick pit near Petherwick House at Ryarsh

Summary

There are the remains of a disused brick earth pit south of Petherwick House, near Ryarsh. The pit covers an area of aproximately 30X40m and is up to 15-20m deep. It runs parallel with the hollow way to the west from Aldington, now cut through by the M20. Access is from the hollow way. There are stepped banks into the east side of the pit. There are also signs of other possible workings at the south end of the pit. It is currently overgrown with large oak trees. The date of the workings is unknown.

Full Description

Disused brick earth pit situated S of Petherwick house (TQ 65995941). Pit covers and area c.30x40m and up to 15-20m deep. Parallel with hollow way to W (from Aldington but now cut by M20) and access to S end of pit from it. Stepped banks cut into E side of pit. Overgrown with large oak trees. Poss other workings at S end of main pit. Date unknown. (1)
