Full Description
Site of shore end of old Herne Bay Pier. Built by the Herne Bay Pier Co. to designs by Thomas Rhodes and Thomas Telford in 1831 to recieve vessels of the General Steam Navigation Co. Timber deck 24' wide, iron clad timber piles in rows of 5 at 20' centres, 3000' long in total. Sail powered single track tramway ran the length of the pier to its T-shaped end where ramps on the landward side of the T led down to the lower landing stage. These also carried the rails. The sail tram, or 'Old Neptune's Car' first operated on the 13th June 1833. The last steamer arrived at the pier in 1862 and the most seaward part was removed in 1865 followed by the rest in 1871. A pair of flat roofed gatehouses stood at the landward end. (1,2)
