Summary

A Concrete World War II pillbox, located in orchard to the north of Stoke Road, near Abbots Court Lodge, Hoo St. Werburgh. The type 24 pillbox faces north-east and is a narrow wall version with brick skin. It was visited during 1995 as part of a defensive survey and found to be in good condition. Formed part of Hoo stop line (GHQ line) anti invasion defences 1940.

Full Description

Concrete type 24 pillbox facing E narrow wall vewrsion with brick skin (1).

This structure is described in the English Heritage report on the Second World War Stop Line which runs from Hoo St Werburgh to Higham Marshes, part of the wider Hoo Peninsula study by English Heritage. The report states that this is a "Second World War reinforced concrete pillbox facing east located in an orchard north of the Stoke Road, east of Hoo St Werburgh. The structure was visible on aerial photographs of 2007 but is under tree cover on recent aerial imagery (September 2013 Google Earth)". (2)
