Full Description
Pair of industrial air raid shelters for the employees of the formerly exisiting and adjacent Alpha Cement Works. Located on the E side of road running north across marshes to Cliffe Fort. Both are of zig-zag plan and are constructed of concrete with an overhead covering of chalk rubble and turf. Entrances face the factory site to the west with emergency exits at the eastern end of either shelter. Recesses in the wall for toilet buckets and some traces of fixings for bemches. Site visit by VTC Smith 14/9/95 (1)
This feature is recorded in the English Heritage Historic Area Assessment for Cliffe parish. The report states: "Other features from the Second World War also survive within the area, including pillboxes and an air raid shelter on north side of Salt Lane, the latter a concrete structure under a mound of chalk which served workers in the cement factory. " (2)
