Full Description
Site of coke oven on Yalding Down mentioned in Hasted (c1797). "Yalding Down...on which is a large kiln for the purpose of burning pit coal into coke, which is effected by laying the coal under earth, and when set on fire quenching the cinders; the method is used for making charcoal from wood.." Though this is an unusual location for a coke over and charcoal production would seem more likely Hasted seems to be aware of the difference and does specify 'sea coal', ie: from the N coal fields. Location uncertain but presumed to be near road over Yalding Down that is marked on Hasted's map, perhaps in the vicinity of Downs Farm. (1)
