In September 1964, a Roman burial group, exposed in the river bank, at TQ 6981 7517, was excavated by G. Dockerell and O. Foster and found to comprise a narrow necked urn containing bones, a flagon, a beaker, a black vase, a Samian dish (form 15) and a cup (form 33). (a) (1) Roman potsherds including Samian have been noted along the shore at this point many times in the past. The finds, dated to early 2nd C. are in the possession of G. Dockerell.
