Monument record TR 36 NE 222 - Adits and World War magazine, near The Thatched Cottage, Kingsgate, Broadstairs and St. Peters
Summary
A number of holes in the grounds of The Thatched Cottage, Kingsgate. Identified as adits, or horizontal mining holes, and probably the result of chalk extraction. A local identification as smugglers tunnels is unlikely. The features were also thought to have been used at some time as ammunition stores for World War I coastal batteries located in close proximity.

Full Description
Five adits leading off a shallow pit in the grounds of The Thached Cottage, Kingsgate nr Broadstairs. TR 3929 6960. Locally known as smugglers tunnels but probably the result of chalk extraction for lime burning. Two of the tunnels ascribed this origin, the other three suggested to be ammunition stores for the WW1 coastal batteries nearby. (1)
